The importance of Rhomboid Muscles in movement and support of human shoulders
The human body is built up of numerous bones, muscles and network of blood vessels that enable a person to perform various functions properly. The muscular system is a wide network of specialized cells called muscle fibers. The muscles keeps the bones intact and allow their fluid and easy movement. The primary function of muscles is contractibility and there are several muscles that attach themselves to bones, blood vessels and other internal organs. Studies indicate that nearly all the movement a person experiences is effect of muscle contraction. The bones and muscles integrate together to form the musculoskeletal system which enables a person to stand, sit, walk, bend, run and maintain a proper posture. The rhomboid muscles are two muscles which are located on the upper back of a person.
The anatomy of Rhomboid muscles:
The rhomboid muscles is actually a name given to two rhombus or diamond shaped muscles namely rhomboid major and rhomboid minor muscle. These two muscles lie in the trapezius which is major back muscle and is responsible for movement and rotation of the scapula. The rhomboid muscles extend from the vertebral column to the vertebral border of the scapula. The two muscles help to retract, rotate and move the shoulder blades and provide stability to the shoulders. Many times the two rhomboid muscles are termed as a single muscle and they receive their blood supply from the dorsal scapular artery.
Rhomboid major muscle:
The rhomboid major muscle is an important skeletal muscle that connects the shoulder blade portion of the body with the spinal column or more commonly known as the back bone. Rhomboid major muscle tough lies below the rhomboid minor is twice in thickness as compared to rhomboid minor muscle. The rhomboid major muscle work together with rhomboid minor muscle to keep the scapula pressed against the thorax and rotate the scapula downwards.
Rhomboid minor muscle:
The rhomboid minor muscle is a small skeletal muscle that is located in the torso region in the upper back, above the rhomboid major muscle and below the trapezius muscle. As said earlier the two muscles work together in performing various functions such as keeping the scapula pressed to the thoracic wall, for the retraction of shoulder blades and rotation of scapula in keeping its downward motion.
The significance of rhomboid muscles:
In human body there are interconnection and integration of various bones, muscles, joint, and nerves which work together to maintain stability and movement. As with muscle strains which restricts the motion of a particular body part, a torn or damaged rhomboid muscle may result scapular instability. The reasons are caused due to rhomboid major muscle during lateral rotation, scapular winging and indentation of scapula. The scapular instability results in restricted movement of arms and shoulders, and a person also feels pain and discomfort. The treatment of scapular instability is done by a surgery. The patient advised to undergo physical and occupational therapy. The therapy session involves easy stretching exercises that help to relax the muscles. The posture of a person defines his personality and a proper posture helps a person to stay fit and poor posture leads to many problems such as chronic back pains, neck pains, and shoulder pains. The rhomboid muscle is integral part of maintaining a proper posture and there are certain exercises specifically designed to improve the function of rhomboid muscles.
