The structure of human body is made of bones, joints and ligaments. It is common occurrence that a person may feel pain in any part of his body which can be caused by either some illness, infection or minor injury. Human back is one of the largest portion in a human body. Human back is the area opposite the chest and it is a large posterior area starting from the neck and shoulders to the pelvis at the bottom. One of the common pain that many people experience is low back pain which involves bones, nerves, tendons, ligaments and muscles which are interconnected and can be source of pain. The amount of pain can vary form a slight ache to constant agonizing pain. But mostly elderly people have more complains of back pain compared to young people.

Functions of low back:

The human backbone consists of a spine which consists of 33 bones. The spinal column is the most important part of the body as it supports the entire human skeleton allowing a person to stand, sit and bend. The low back portion is known as lumbar spine and it supports the weight of the body. The lumbar spine consists of ligaments, posterior elements and intervertebral discs. The lumbar spine is made up of five vertebrae located between thoracic spine and sacrum, this area is known as the ‘lower back’. The function of lumbar spine is structural support, movement and protection of spinal cord and spinal nerves.

Causes and symptoms of low back pain:

The low back pain can be caused if a person has suffered slight injury or bruise which can hurt the bones and cause problems in the muscles and joints. Muscle strain is one of the most common cause of back pain but muscles tend to heal themselves and usually the pain goes away in few days. The low back pain can be caused by certain discomfort either in the ligaments around the spine and discs, nerves or spinal cord or internal muscles and some organs of the pelvis. Low back pain can categorized into three sections based on the duration of the pain

  • Acute pain: If the pain lasts less than 6 weeks
  • Sub chronic pain: This lasts for 6 to 12 weeks
  • Chronic pain: If the pain persists for more than 12 weeks

A person may experience a dull sensation in acute pain stage which may turn into aggravated pain in the chronic pain stage and make it difficult for a person to stand, sit or move his body.

Treatment of low back pain:

The treatment of low back pain depends on the amount and duration of the pain. An X-ray of the patient’s back is taken to determine the extent of back pain and what medication would be required. The treatment includes certain pain relieving balms, heat applications, cold pack and use of pain medications.

Use of peppermint and sage to soothe the low back pain:

Since ancient times people have been using oil as a major cure to relieve pain and ease the muscles. Oils are very effective and have no or minimum side effects. There are some essential oils which are used to treat patients suffering from low back pains. The essential oils are extracted from the petals, roots, stems and other part of the plants. The oils are beneficial in treatment of acute and chronic pain, muscle strains, inflammation and neuropathy. Some popular essential oils are

  • Peppermint Oil:

Peppermint is a hybrid mint with properties of a water mint and spear mint. Peppermint has a cooling effect which soothes the muscle in acute and chronic pain. It also has long term prevention and protection from inflammation, tightness and soreness in the lower back

  • How to use

A person may directly use diluted peppermint and apply it to the pain affected area.

  • Sage Oil:

Clary sage oil is best oil to use during muscle spasms, ligament damage and inflammation. When a person’s back hurt, the muscles are constricted and take time to stretch out. Sage oil can relax the muscles and allow pain free movement

  • How to use

Mix 4-5 drops of sage oil with either almond or coconut oil and gently apply and massage this mixture on the area that is causing most pain.
