The importance of hair and reasons for hair loss
One of the common and defining feature of a person that make an instant impression on people is the hair of a person. The hair quality, color and style differ from person to person and many people go to special lengths taking care of the hair. Nowadays people can easily change the style and color of the hair according to their wishes. Hair loss one of the common medical condition that effects many people at some point of their lives. Hair loss is a growing concern faced by men, women, and even children. Tough a person has hair present nearly everywhere on his body except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet but hair loss terminology is mostly used when there is loss of hair on the head of a person.
Importance of hair:
Hair is made up of protein known as keratin which grows in the numerous hair follicles present in the dermis or outer layer of the skin. The hair follicles produce new cells which replace the old cells. On average a person has thousands of hair on his head and lose about hundred every day. Hair strands or fibers are build up of three layers namely the cuticle, cortex and medulla. The color of hair is determined by melanin found in the cortex. There are people with different types of hair such as flat, curly and wavy hair. Black and brown hair are two of the natural hair colors, blond hair is result of pigmentation and gray hair occurs when melanin is produced less. Hair primarily serves to give warmth to humans and help in regulation of temperature. The nerve receptors present in the hair follicles sense movements and vibrations in the air. The hair present in the eyebrows and eyelashes prevent dust and debris to enter in the eye
Causes of hair loss:
The hair grows at increasing speed when a person is a child and also when he reaches maturity but after a certain age the hair growth declines or slows down. Hair loss is more common in men as compared to women and elderly people tend to experience more hair loss. The medical term for hair loss is ‘alopecia’ or baldness. There are different pattern of hair loss in men and women, hair loss is mostly caused by genetic reasons and hormonal balance. The health conditions that can cause hair loss are protein deficiency, emotional stress, some illness such as iron deficiency and thyroid disease.
Treatment and prevention of hair loss:
Hair loss is such a medical condition that is bound to a lifetime of a person. If it does not happen in the prime of life then hair loss in old age and in elderly people is very much likely. A person can only prevent temporary hair loss with proper hair hygiene, regular use of hair shampoos and conditioners. People who experience some hair loss can also undergo hair transplant surgeries which due to efficient technology are proving to be quite beneficial to regain the hair growth and prevent permanent baldness. Doctors advised patient to do screening of the hair which includes test that determines the elements needed for hair growth such as iron level and vitamin deficiency. Many times skin specialist and dermatologist suggest a scalp biopsy for examination of hair quality.
