The importance Gluteus Maximus Muscle in supporting body movements
The entire structure of human is based on the interconnection of several bones, muscles, joints, nerves, tissue which work together to enable a person to perform various task and maintain a healthy living. The bones and muscle along with ligaments, joints, tendons and blood vessels make up the entire skeletal system of a human. The bones not only protect the organs but allow movement and stability. The muscles work both externally and internally to support the numerous functions of the human body. The gluteal muscles is a name given to combination of three muscle which make up the buttocks region namely the Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Minumus and Gluteus Medius. These three muscles spread from the ilium and sacrum region till the femur region. The functions of these muscles include the extension, internal and external hip joint rotation. If the gluteal muscles are not strong then it increases the risk of injury due to disproportionate low backs, calves and hamstring.
Gluteus Maximus is the largest of all the three gluteal muscles and makes up the large area and shape of the hips. It is the main exterior muscle of the hip. The Gluteus Maximus is quadrilateral in shape and its mass is thick flesh. The Gluteus Maximus is rough in structure and is made up of muscle fascicles which lie parallel to one another and are bundled. There are many nerves that runs in the Gluteus Maximus muscle which includes the sciatic nerve (the largest nerve that runs from the lower back into the buttocks and down into the legs), superior gluteal muscles and pedendal nerve (this nerve runs from the lower back region through the pelvic floor muscles and out into the perenium).
Function of Gluteus Maximus muscle:
As Gluteus Maximus is the largest exterior muscle, it is also the strongest muscle which is connected to the tailbone and also other surrounding bones. The Gluteus Maximus muscle main function is to allow easy movement of the hip and thigh. When a person sits, stands or climbs the stairs, all these activities or movements are due to muscle contractions in Gluteus Maximus. The Gluteus Maximus muscle due to its strength helps a person to run faster, jump considerably higher, lift heavier objects with ease and cycle more energitacally.
Pain linked to Gluteus Maximus muscle:
As hip is essential component in supporting movement and stability while sitting down or standing up, the pain or wear and tear in the Gluteus Maximus muscle may make it difficult for a person to either stand from sitting position or lower his body while sitting down. The pain associated with Gluteus Maximus muscle is known as ‘Gluteus Maximus Syndrome’. This pain is caused by the muscle spasms in the Gluteus Maximus, and it usually goes away when a person sits down. There are other pain also linked with Gluteus Maximus which includes inflammation of the tendons which is known as tendinitis, and is caused by the friction of the bones, tendons and Gluteus Maximus. The treatment of Gluteus Maximus muscle pain is done through physical therapy, use of injections or consuming anti-inflammatory medicine. The therapist usually put pressure on the joint of the Gluteus Maximus muscle and ask patients to perform exercises in order to improve the function and movement of the muscle.
