A balanced diet with a proper nutritional value is ideal to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Consuming natural foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fibers and antioxidants can help a person remain strong, control his weight, perform daily tasks with ease and prevent chronic diseases (like heart diseases, cancer) to develop. Eating healthy means consuming food enriched with protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. A proper diet helps to maintain health and proper functioning of internal organs, cells and tissue.

Why a good nutritional diet important:

The human body is made such that every day the physiological functions require certain energy and strength to work properly. Antioxidants are special substances that protect the body cells from damage which may happen due any infection, smoking, pollutants that a person inhales, or being exposed to certain chemicals, or from any metabolism effect. The antioxidants protect the body from damage due to free radicals. Free radicals are groups of atom that can take place when oxygen comes in contact with molecules. When these free radicals are formed they start to effect the functionality of the cells, the cells perform poorly and even die in the process. Free radicals occur naturally in the human body and antioxidants are also present to counter them but sometimes free radicals outnumber the antioxidants. In these situations a person needs to take certain vitamins to prevent cell damage and remove free radicals.

Use and benefits of Antioxidants:

Antioxidants present in certain vitamins are widely used to prevent cellular damage as a cell damage can effect cell membranes, damage the blood vessel and increase the risk of heart problems and even cancers. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some common type of antioxidants substances include Vitamin C and E, and a famous mineral named selenium. The use of antioxidants is very much important to maintain good health and prevent various illnesses to develop such as cancers, Alzheimer disease and arthritis which effects the bones. The fruits and vegetables should be part of a healthy routine and as occurring naturally they have little or no side effects. Consumption of seeds and nuts along with vegetables and fruits can increase the levels of antioxidants in the body. A person can also take particular dietary supplements to increase antioxidant intake but a person needs to consult a professional nutritionist who can guide which supplements to take and the right dosage too.

Types of Antioxidant Food:

There are many dietary antioxidants such as selenium, Vitamin A, carotenoids such as Vitamin C and E and various phytochemicals. The antioxidants are also present in normally consumed food, large amounts are present in fruits, vegetable and nuts whereas small amounts are present in meat such as chicken and fish. The type of food which contains maximum amount of antioxidants are fruits like grapes, blueberries, and other products such as nuts, whole grains and green tea.
