Mainstay – Mirrors (Compilation)

March 28th, 2010

This is a little compilation I put together for the song Mirrors by Mainstay. I hope it reflects the shallowness of modern evangelism versus the greatness of God Almighty. “Like much of this record, this song is aimed at showing Christians that many of the answers we are getting to our problems today are man-centered and ineffective when dealing with problems of sin, depression, and self-worth. Pop psychology has infiltrated the church so much that we forget that the ultimate end of man is not to feel good about one’s self or focus on finding who we are, but rather to be “taken by God’s glory” and lose interest in our worth, self-esteem, or value. That is the theme that this song tackles – The way for believers to be happy and feel valuable is to value God supremely and reject any notions of “self-help.” If man is truly dead in trespasses and sins, the term “self-help” is ridiculous. We need Christ to redeem us from our sin, and find our value in His saving work on the cross. Instead of looking in the mirror and treasuring the good in us, we need to be transfixed on Christ and treasuring and savoring the ultimate good – and rejoicing in the fact that He imparts HIS righteousness to us, undeserving as we are.” – Justin Anderson (Mainstay)

At one time the Samurai were encountered with christians and many where converted because it made sense to give ones life for a master, and it was much easier for the Samurai to do so for a loving God. So like the Samurai we must become selfless hence the Christian Samurai. Also that really did happen look it up.

    This was a cool video
but im sorry..i couldn’t help but feel offended when i saw Billy Grahm and Joyce Meyres and Rick Warren up there on the ’self Help’ lists.
i cant tell you how much their ministies have helped me get through so many problems in my life and bring me Closer to God. In Rick warrens Purpose Driven Life..there is over 1500 seperate verses in the whole book!
And Joyce’s books have brought me to realizehow much i need God.

i agree with xtchsbrlx. we definitely shouldn’t go so far as to degrade ourselves, because we are creations of God. for us to say we’re stupid or useless, that’s like saying God created something stupid or useless. i think that loving your neighbor as much as yourself can be seen differently in a another light. when you’re injured, you wish for hospitality, right? when you’re struggling, you want to learn something from it and get closer to God, right? i dont think it means love as in worth.

“the Bible speaks to loving your neighbor as u love yourself, meaning that there’s a need for self worth at the core.” The context of the greatest 2 commandments is selfless love.

I don’t think anyone believes that there should be a decrease in self worth. It’s just that that self worth 1)becomes less and less important to a believer as 2)he or she centers God in their lives more and more. Mr Anderson :p puts it well with “lose interest in our worth”. We can’t degrade ourselves and expect that to glorify God (although I say this with a healthy nod to Phil 3:7,8) And not to specifically question Jakes, but it’s really not up to us who the disciples of Christ are.

Well. if you’d like to get technical about it,the Bible speaks to loving your neighbor as u love yourself, meaning that there’s a need for self worth at the core… Ministers such as TD Jakes have spoken on this, but i’m sure u will probably take a TD Jakes quote on this very Biblical principle, and spin it, in order to make it seem as though ALL TD Jakes is about is me me me.. when that’s not the case.whatever quote u find wont negate the fact that TD is a Disciple & IS in fact doing Gods will.

Name specifics of who is not teaching self-help and is in this video, and I’ll provide you quotes that refute your assertion.

Be careful not to lump all evangelists into one pile Lane.. many of those authors/ministers you showed are teaching exactly what this song says…There’s no self help…and that we have to rely on Jesus only…it’s pretty easy to accuse all those on ministers TV of being shallow, but many of them do have a genuine heart for God.

Amazing! This is spot on! I only wish there were more people who could empathize with the lyrics of this song. It’s meaning passes understanding.

God Bless!!!! I’m not surprised this is not highly commented on. It flies in the face of “accepted” Christian practice.
